Aberdare National Park
Tucked away in the Aberdare mountain ranges, this 766sq km park consists of high alpine moorland and primeval forest with many cascading waterfalls. There are two tree-lodges built in the park, the Ark and Tree Tops lodge each one of them serviced by a base hotel situated outside the park. Game drives are rarely done here and guests enjoy watching wildlife from the comfort of their lodges. Both lodges have floodlit water holes that attract the wildlife and salt deposits in front of the lodges help lure the animals out of the thick forests.
Game here include Elephant, Giraffe, Buffalo, Zebra, the rare black Rhino, Impala, Gazelle, the rare Bongo antelope, African Hare, Warthog, the Hog family, Water Buck, Lion, Leopard, Cheetah, Hyena, Cerval cat with monkeys of all types including the spectacular black and white Colobus and many more species. Bird life thrives here with over 300 different species already identified.
The unusual vegetation, rugged terrain, streams and waterfalls combine to create an area of great scenic beauty in the National Park.
The Aberdares are an isolated volcanic range that forms the eastern wall of the rift valley, running roughly 100km north to south between Nairobi and Thomson's Falls. There are two main peaks, Ol Donyo Lesatima (3,999m) and Kinangop (3,906m) separated by a long saddle of alpine moorland at over 3,000m. There are many clear streams and waterfalls.
Mist and rain occur throughout much of the year, with precipitation varying from around 1000mm on the north western slopes to as much as 3000mm in the south east yearly. Heavy rainfall occurs through most of the year.
The park is only 160km from Nairobi and is readily accessible on tarmac. It is serviced by Mweiga Airstrip, next to the park headquarters and Nyeri Airstrip which is 12 km from Mweiga headquarters.
