Ruwenzori National Park
This 120km long mountain range, also referred to as the mountains of the Moon form the highest mountain range in the whole of Africa, third in height after Mt. Kenya and Mt. Kilimanjaro.
The mountains have 6 distinct glacial peaks - Mount Speke, Mount Stanley, Mount Gessi, Mount Emin Pasha, Mount Luigi da Savoia and Mount Baker
The park derives its name from the mountain range and which means "rainmaker". This region probably receives the most rainfall annually in the whole of Africa. The ice covered peaks are only visible a few days in the year.
A variety of large mammals inhabits the lower slopes, chimpanzee, colobus monkey and other primates, leopard, forest hog, elephant and Rock Hyrax. Birdlife is prolific and includes the Rwenzori Turaco, francolin, olive pigeon and the white-necked raven. Over 177 species have been recorded.
The main activities here are hiking and bird watching. Hiking the on central circuit takes 6 nights 7 days and allows one to see the main peaks. Other shorter hikes can take up to 4 days.
The Park can be accessed both by road and by air. There are no scheduled flights and only private charters fly guests to Kasese air strip where a short transfer is done by road to the park.
